Concrete stain & joinery

Windows, shutters, cladding and decking. Treat the wood before colouring it.

Exterior timber does not die of old age but of trapped moisture. A film-forming varnish applied to damp wood seals the water in, and the joinery rots beneath an intact surface. We work with microporous stains that let the wood breathe, after treating the substrate against fungi and insects. On already damaged joinery we strip before treating.

How we work

01

Stripping back

Stripping or sanding of old coatings.

02

Treatment

Fungicidal and insecticidal product, with controlled full drying before any finish is applied.

03

Staining

Two to three coats of microporous stain, tinted or clear, with de-nibbing between coats.

Frequently asked

How often should stain be renewed?

Three to five years on south or west elevations, up to eight on a sheltered façade. Maintaining on time costs far less than a full strip.

Stain or paint on shutters?

Stain lets the wood breathe and ages by fading. Paint covers better but flakes. On good timber we recommend stain.
