The context
A nineteenth-century farm building: blackened exposed beams, cladding in poor condition, rendered façade to repair.
The constraint
The beams had been treated with tar in the sixties. Soft blasting took them back to bare without cutting into the wood, at two days per bay. The façade then received an ochre lime wash, consistent with the regional vernacular.
